Shiseido - Beyond Time
Associate Creative Director - R/GA
What if we could bend time so a parent could become younger than their child, or lovers can glimpse
each other before they met? What
would change? What would stay the same?
Beyond Time, was commisioned by Shiseido’s new Global Innovation Center in Yokohama, Japan, as an immersive, interactive, deep-tech installation that allows two people to seemingly break the boundaries of time by experimenting with aging.
My role was ACD of visual design with a focus on space design and architechture as well as closely collaborating with the technicians on all UI/UX and motion design.

The installation allows two people to seemly travel through different ages of their lives. Participants see their companions as they would look years from now, having a conversation through science-based age simulations.
Beyond Time is more than an immersive age simulation device. It is an emotional experience that encourages people to recognize the beauty of growing old, and an endeavor from one of Japan’s most iconic brands to promote a deeper definition of “beautiful” that is both more inclusive and more real.

Aging

We created a bespoke technology solution around a real-time, 3D Facial Age Simulation Engine. The experience looks at 1,300
data points in a users face, and compares them to all the average face models in a 3D face
database (the second largest 3D face model in the world). Based on this science of
aging, we were able to simulate any face at different ages, in real-time.

I took cues from the scientific phenomena around the doppler effect for time travel simulations. Too distinguish when users are moving forward or backward in time blue and red tones were added and synchronized throughout the installation and architecture.
Below are different design sketches around how the participants would look as they travel through time.

Architechture

The architecture of the space was inspired by the Japanese tea house. I wanted to modernize the concept of this traditional space, historically associated with early forms of communication in Japanese society. It was important to create a space that culturally felt familiar, allowing people to open up and be willing to discuss personal matters around aging and beauty.
Opacity enabled walls furthered this idea of intamacy in a public space. We used electrically charged films on the glass enabling the walls to become transparent and opaque according to the experience journey. The lighting animaitons inside the walls were in sync with how light changes color when traveling towards or away from objects in space.
Kinects and cameras connect to the opposite room’s computers, and we use a real time communications engine to synchronize states between the two computers, enabling a seamless experience between the two participants.

We spent around 14 months working hard on creating a new data and technology platform
to combine decades of skin science from Shiseido with a bespoke technology solution
based on cutting edge face capturing and aging research.
We were able to create an immersive experience that combines 3D age simulations, sound, lights, environment changes and verbal design to create an emotionally focused experience for two people to have a deep and inspiring conversation about the beauty of aging. All without social gimmicks or sacrificing people’s privacy.
